I’ve Had to Redo the Work of a Big Agency: Why Strategy Matters More Than Scale

I’ve Had to Redo the Work of a Big Agency: Why Strategy Matters More Than Scale
October 25, 2025 by Dane Moses John

Why Size Doesn’t Guarantee Strategic Thinking**

There’s a belief in the business world that the bigger the agency, the better the work. Large teams, impressive portfolios, big-name clients — surely that’s where the best strategic thinking lives.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: I’ve had to redo the work of big agencies more times than I can count.

Work that came with high price tags. Work that looked glossy on the surface. Work that ticked all the usual boxes in a boardroom presentation.

Yet somehow… it missed the mark where it matters most: the customer.

The illusion of big agency brilliance

Big agencies are brilliant at selling the idea of brilliance. They pitch well. They present beautifully. They have the strongest production machines in the game.

But in the rush to impress, something often gets lost:

  • The actual brand identity
  • The lived customer experience
  • The cultural nuance that shapes behavior
  • The why behind decisions

Great creative isn’t measured by how cool it looks — it’s measured by how effectively it connects.

When ego replaces empathy

Some agencies build for awards, not audiences. They create for each other instead of real people in real contexts.

It’s easy to forget:

Marketing isn’t art. It’s communication.
And communication only works when someone feels understood.

If the message doesn’t land with the people it’s meant for, the campaign fails — no matter how pretty the deck was.

Brands can’t afford to get it wrong

When a campaign flops, the brand pays for it:

  • Lost trust
  • Lost revenue
  • Lost time

And then someone like me steps in to translate creativity back into relevance.
Not to reinvent everything — but to ground it.
To bring human truth back to the center.
To transform marketing from performance into purpose.

What smaller teams do better

There’s a reason independent strategists and boutique studios are becoming the smarter choice:

✅ Closer collaboration with the brand
✅ Faster, more focused decision-making
✅ Less bureaucracy — more thinking
✅ Work rooted in real audience insight
✅ Accountability to impact, not accolades

When fewer people touch the work, clarity becomes easier. Strategy becomes sharper. Execution becomes more authentic.

Big agencies aren’t broken — but they’re bloated

Let’s be clear: there are incredibly talented people working in major agencies.
I’ve worked with them. I admire them.

But the system they operate in often prioritizes:

  • process over progress
  • trends over truth
  • output over outcome

Great brands can’t rely on that.

The results are what matter

At the end of the day, the question isn’t:

Who made it?
It’s:
Did it work?

If the answer is no, then scale and prestige mean nothing.
A brand deserves work that earns attention — not demands it.
Work that builds value — not just volume.
Work that audiences actually care about — not just notice.

The future looks smaller (and smarter)

Brands are waking up to a new reality:

The best ideas don’t always come from the biggest rooms.

They come from thinkers, writers, creatives, and strategists who:

  • listen more than they assume
  • challenge instead of conform
  • build what’s true, not what’s trendy

That’s where the real value lives.

Closing thought

I’ve had to redo the work of big agencies — not because I’m more talented, not because their teams aren’t skilled —
but because I care about the customer more than the checklist.

And increasingly, that’s what brands need:
less complication
less ego
less noise

More clarity. More truth. More impact.
